I love the idea of a book box or book subscription. A surprise parcel in the post every month or so, packed with books, treats and edible goodies? Yes please! However, I’m always fearful that I’ll receive a book I already have so I’ve stopped short of actually signing up to any.

The lovely people at My Chronicle Box kindly offered to send me one of their boxes free of charge to review. There was a bit of a struggle at the beginning as I already had copies of the next two boxes at the time. I didn’t know what the third box, the November box would contain but we decided that was the one for me.

So November came around and as if by magic (ok Royal Mail) a lovely box was left on my doorstep.

So what was inside?

There was a lovely signed first edition of The Postscript Murders by Elly Griffiths, enclosed in a smart little red tote bag. There was a poster of the book and a fabulous book themed cushion cover which now takes pride on place on my reading chair.

There are three types of subscriptions.

The monthly Crime and Mystery Fiction box contains a signed hardback first edition book and three additional book related products and exclusive author content. It is priced at £26 per month.

The quarterly Science Fiction and Fantasy box contains three new releases together with additional book related products and exclusive author content. It is priced at £48 per quarter.

The quarterly Crime and Mystery Fiction box contains three new releases, book related products and exclusive author content. It is priced at £48 per quarter.

There are other prices and subscription times available.

All subscription prices include postage.

There are also special edition boxes, a gothic box and a Ben Aaronovitch box, containing books and local artisan products. They are priced at £50 each.

If you just want to buy a signed book then there is also a selection to choose from.

So would I buy one? I think if you don’t buy many books, or collection signed editions, then this is a great option (or a great gift for someone who would like a to received a signed book each month or a little book to be read pile each quarter). For me, there is the risk of receiving a duplicate book, though I could always donate the unsigned one to a friend or charity if there did happen to be a duplicate. I think the special thing about this subscription is the fact that the books are signed and the related products things that I would love, but wouldn’t usually buy.
