Six Degrees of Separation is the brainchild of Kate from Books Are My Favourite and My Best. Each month there is a different starter book and through six books, with what can be, on my part, extremely tenuous links, see which book you end up at.

The starter book this month is The French Lieutenant’s Woman by John Fowles. The tale of a lovely affair shunned by society was made into a film starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.

Meryl Streep also famously starred in The Devil Wears Prada, based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger in which Andrea discovers the price she has to pay to make it in the magazine industry.

In Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold. Magician Carter is drawn into a different type of mystery when the President dies two hours after seeing Carter’s act. With the secret service after him, Carter has to figure out what really happened.

Another novel featuring stage magic is The Prestige by Christopher Priest. Made into a film starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, the story tells of the rivalry between two stage magicians.

Another book made into a film starring Mr Bale was American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, which tells the tale of Wall Street working, suave and sophisticated, and pyscotic Patrick Bateman.

A different kind of psychopath is to be found in Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, where Dexter may be a serial killer but he only kills the bad guys. Then along comes another serial killer.

Another Dexter, this time one writing about crimes. Colin Dexter created the eponymous Endeavour Morse, whose debut outing was Last Bus to Woodstock in which Morse and Lewis are looking for the killer of a woman, though all leads are fading fast.
