Nancy Barone – Q&A

Today I’m pleased to welcome Nancy Barone to the blog. Nancy is the author of The Husband Diet, with the sequel, My Big Fat Italian Break-Up being published on 27 July  2016. Her novel, Desserted in Sicily was published on 17 July 2016.

Nancy answered a few of my questions.

1. Tell us a little about My Big Fat Italian Break-up and Desserted in Sicily.

Hi Janet and thank you so much for this opportunity to chat!

My latest books, Desserted in Sicily and My Big Fat Italian Break-up originate from two different moments in my life.

Desserted in Sicily came to me while visiting the island of Lipari. I was so taken with the wild natural beauty and the intimacy of the island (population 10k) that I wondered what it would be like when all the tourists left. And that’s when Gillian Morana came to life. She’s like a really good friend to me now! The island of Lipari really has it all, in my opinion- gorgeous food, amazing views and- oh- did I mention the men?

My Big Fat Italian Break-up, on the contrary, is the sequel to my successful story, The Husband Diet that is still high up on the Amazon best-selling list after 3 years. I guess the secret to its success is that Erica Cantelli, my heroine, is like your girl next door, only with a gazillion more dreams and very driven. Perhaps a bit too much. After she’s finally obtained it all, everything starts to slip away again, including her dreamboat partner Julian Foxham who, BTW, has had excellent reviews from readers. Many have written to say, “I want me a Julian!”

2. What inspired the book?

Like me, my heroines are native English speakers who find themselves in Italy for one reason or another… and get ‘trapped’ by a local hunk.

3. Are you a plan, plan, plan writer or do you sit down and see where the words take you? How long does the process take you from first line to completed novel?

I’d love to be either a plotter or a punster, but the truth is… this morning I woke up with the first page of my next book already in my head! So I had to sit up, grab my notebook and scribble away- I love that!

4. What did you discover about the process of creating a novel that surprised you?

I think writing gives me the opportunity to delve into people’s psyche, but also into my own- I always discover something new about the way my own brain works, and when I move a paragraph or a chapter, it slots in perfectly, opening up new avenues and it never ceases to amaze me.

5. What do you do when you aren’t writing? What do you do to relax and get away from it all?

I teach English in a tiny fishing village in Sicily, but luckily my job allows me the writing time I need. I’m also completing a Master at the moment, but I always manage to find the time for a walk on the beach- and Sicilian ice-cream!

5. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life which book would it be?

Gosh, like all of your readers, choosing would be impossible! But if I had to say how much I admire the talent and tenacity of someone, it would be Kerry Fisher for her The School Gate Survival Guide! I also love romance authors such as Lisa Marie Rice, a very good friend of mine. NO Alpha-male is anywhere near hers in hotness…

Regarding other authors, I’m biased of course, but I think that Bookouture authors are truly the best out there! The books are top-notch quality with that extra-something! Not to mention they are amazing people to chat with and get me through my Uh-uh days!

7. I like to end my Q&A’s with the same question so here we go. During all the Q&As and interviews you’ve done what question have you not been asked that you wish had been asked – and what’s the answer?

I wish someone would ask me about my connection with my heroines! Like Gillian, Erica and Valentina (my beloved new heroine), I have close ties to Italy, love food (and it shows!) and dream of that writing desk above the sea! One day…

Thanks very much for answering my questions and for appearing on my blog.

Thank you so much, Janet and your followers! I really enjoyed answering your questions!

About the Books:

“Erica has now found her Mr. Right. But can she keep him…?

After a failed marriage, Erica Cantelli has finally made it to Italy with her two children- and, amazingly, their delicious school principal Julian Foxham who chose her over all the stick-figured moms in Chanel suits and pearls.
The plan was for him to run the farm and for her to run her the country B&B, A Taste of Tuscany.
Two years in, however, her business is failing miserably, while Julian’s career as a novelist is soaring. As is he, jetting off with his younger- and gorgeous- publicist.
Despite having set a wedding date, with every day that goes by, their personal dreams are heading in opposite directions and her sexy Italian chef Alberto offers her a shoulder to cry on. And the wine that causes her to make a huge mistake…
When she discovers that a rival B&B is scheming to run her into the ground, Erica, a former hotel manager and butt-kicker extraordinaire who has been a ‘dormant’ housewife until now, finally unleashes all her cut-throat instincts to fight back and protect her family’s livelihood.

Yes, The Amazing Erica is back, but will her wedding cake hold together, or are she and Julian skating on thin icing?”

“In an attempt to resuscitate her twenty-five year-old marriage, GILLIAN DOBSON knocks down a few tranquilizers and takes the dreaded flight to the Sicilian island of Lipari to surprise her husband, away on a business trip. Big mistake- he has Alternative Female Company.

To preserve what’s left of her dignity, Gillian has no choice but to dash out into the street in her bathrobe, her life practically over. In her drugged, confused state, she is (almost) hit by a car.
The driver turns out to be the younger, sex-on-a-stick local playboy, MATTIA SPADARO, a cross between Adonis and Rudolph Valentino. And a flirt extraordinaire. If simply looking at him gives her electric shock, anything more would surely give her a heart attack? What’s worse, they share a wild passion for Sicilian desserts. Just what she needs- another man who’s bad for her.

But between the cannoli and the Sicilian ice cream, when Gillian must make a few life-changing decisions, will Mattia really be there for her or will she once again be… Desserted in Sicily?
For fans of Jennifer Weiner, Jen Lancaster, Marian Keyes and Sue Watson.”
